The band was formed in 1985 by Donita Sparks and Suzi Gardner, who were later joined by Jennifer Finch and Dee Plakas. They signed to Epitaph Records for their first album and to Sub Pop in 1989. The name is taken from a slang phrase from the 1950s which means “square,” but is often mistaken for a reference to a sex position, also called “69”. In 1991 the band formed Rock For Choice, a Pro-Choice women’s rights group which was supported by other bands of that era, including Nirvana, Mudhoney, Pearl Jam, 7 Year Bitch. Rock for Choice still exists. The band gained a certain amount of notoriety for their performance at the 1992 Reading Festival, when Donita Sparks removed her tampon on-stage and threw it into the crowd in protest against the missiles being thrown by the crowd. In the UK, the band are most famous for an appearance on the popular late-night entertainment programme The Word, in which Sparks pulled her pants down to reveal her pubic area. During a live show in London in 2000, the band offered a one night stand with Dee Plakas as a raffle prize, although it is unclear as to whether this was a genuine offer or not. According to the band’s website, “L7 are on an indefinite hiatus. We know that’s vague, but that’s just the way it is. The future of the band is a bit up in the air at the moment.”

Frightwig

Frightwig is American slang used to denote a woman whose appearance is disheveled; she is unruly, perhaps under the influence and she doesn’t give a damn They were located in San Francisco, California. Though they predated the riot grrl movement, they have a similar approach and were influential to its development. For example, they were known for inviting a male audience member on stage to “dance” during the song “A Man’s Gotta Do What a Man’s Gotta Do” and thereby publicly ridiculing him. Frightwig was composed of Cecilia Lynch, Deanna Ashley, Mia Levin, Megan Page, and Rebecca Tucker. During Frightwig’s influential history they had many line up changes.

In 1998 Bianca met Berila and the 2 girls talked about a comun desire of having an all girl band. Then Berila joined on drums and Bianca on guitar. They knew it would be hard to find girls into punk rock because the old fashion rules of society, but they wanted to give a try. Thinking on who whould acept the mission, Bianca called a friend, Silvia - she was learning to play bass. They needed one more person to complete the group, and thats when Iéri appeared and so the band was formed. They have chosen the name Bulimia ebcause of a disease that too many women get it by being obsessed by a beauty padron tought by media. It couldn't be a better name for a band who was fighting against the machist culture and the patriarchal society.

Lunachicks

A bend from New York City. The bend formed in 1987 and has been on hiatus since 2000. Their music was described as "a frenzied mix of punk, metal, pop and rock". The band claimed influences including The Ramones, Kiss, and the MC5. Theo Kogan, Gina Volpe, and Sydney "Squid" Silver formed the band and Sindi Benezra was asked to join shortly after. The band played their first show in 1988 with Theo's then-boyfriend Mike on the drums. With drummer Becky Wreck (Susan Rebecca Lloyd) on board they released a self-titled 4-song EP in 1989. The band later expressed their strong dislike for the albums production and the fact that they did not earn any money from Blast First.

Mass-Kotki can be really sweet at one moment and then can be critical and wisely angry with various nonsense, having fun with it at the same time. Since autumn 2008 they have enriched their crude collection of instruments (a drum machine, a synthesiser and a bass guitar) with a guitar player – Siwa (known from punk bands like Junkie Train, Zimbabwe, Pogotowie Seksualne).

Motorama in a two-piece band from Rome. The grrrls are playing post-punk garage with a great weird tremelo guitar they call "elephant-fuzz". These two girls (once they were three) have been playing since 2000. Their music is so frantic and energetic that seems hard to believe there isn't a full band. This girly duo is all about rocking hard with a great punkish/d.i.y attitude and a greasy garage sound. Motorama are raw and filthy, just like a riot girl band supposed to be. Their music ranges from the late 80's/early 90's riot grrrls sound which defined bands such as Babes In Toyland and Hole (on their first album) to more forward thinking acts like Sonic Youth and Blonde Redhead to the vibrating energies of Atari Teenage Riot , minus the electronics.
